The first round of the 2011 GP2 Asia Series gets underway on Thursday at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi where the first race weekend will take place on the 4.73 kms layout. Following on from four days of intense testing at the track Spain’s Racing Engineering team are confident of getting off to a flying start in what looks likely to be a very competitive series.
Making their debut in the GP2 Asia series, Racing Engineering have been working hard to extract the maximum from the new for 2011 Dallara design with its Pirelli tyres and the consistently quick times that driver Dani Clos set during the recent test sessions augers well for the six race Championship that will take place over the next four weeks.
Racing Engineering’s drivers for the series combines experience with promise as Spain’s Dani Clos lines up alongside France’s Nathanaël Berthon. Dani Clos is beginning his third season with the Racing Engineering team; his continuing improvement is shown by the 2010 season where he finished an excellent 4th in the GP2 Series. Clos set some very quick times during the four day test session and learnt a lot about the new car, he is confident that there is still a lot more to come as becomes more familiar with the 2011 Dallara.
For Berthon this will be his first race in a GP2 car but his results during the 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 Series where he scored four podium finishes and took a win at Magny-Cours together with his recent testing form in the Racing Engineering car shows that he will be very competitive in the Asian series.
