Following the cancellation of the four races due to be held at Bahrain due to the concerns over safety in that country the final round of the 2011 GP2 Asia Series will take place this weekend, the 18th, 19th and 20th of March at Imola.

This will be the first time the GP2 cars have raced at Imola since 2006 and, with the introduction of the new Dallara chassis and Pirelli tyres for 2011, all the GP2 teams and drivers will be starting from the same point with no previous frame of reference.

Following the first round of the GP2 Asia Series, held at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, Spain’s Racing Engineering team and its two drivers Dani Clos and Nathanaël Berthon showed they have already learnt how to make the new Dallara a front-runner.

Dani Clos was very quick in Abu Dhabi qualifying fourth for Friday’s race before a startline accident saw him forced to retire. Some incredibly hard work by the Racing Engineering team saw Clos start Saturday’s race from the back of the grid but understandably, with no time to test and sort the car, Clos made sure he bought the car home undamaged.

Nathanaël Berthon used the Abu Dhabi weekend as an opportunity to learn about qualifying and racing a GP2 car and the Frenchman quickly showed his talent by qualifying tenth and running quickly in the first race until a mechanical failure saw him retire. Berthon was even faster on Saturday driving an excellent race to climb from 19th on the grid to finish 8th at the chequered flag, unfortunately a post-race penalty saw him drop to 14th.

The Racing Engineering team, in their new red and yellow livery, is sure to be right at the front for this weekend’s races and a victory for one of their drivers is a real possibility on this famous 4.9 Km Italian track.
